Understanding the time-dependent effective diffusion coefficient measured by diffusion MRI: the intra-cellular case

چکیده
Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (dMRI) can be used to measure a time-dependent effective diffusion coefficient that can in turn reveal information about the tissue geometry. Recently a mathematical model for the time-dependent effective diffusion coefficient was obtained using homogenization techniques after imposing a certain scaling relationship for the time, the biological cell membrane permeability, the diffusion-encoding magnetic field gradient strength, and a periodicity length of the cellular geometry. With this choice of the scaling of the physical parameters, the effective diffusion coefficient of the medium can be computed after solving a diffusion equation subject to a time-dependent Neumann boundary condition, independently in the biological cells and in the extra-cellular space. In this paper, we analyze this new model, which we call the H-ADC model, in the case of finite domains, which is relevant to diffusion inside biological cells. We use both the eigenfunction expansion and the single layer potential representation for the solution of the above mentioned diffusion equation to obtain analytical expressions for the effective diffusion coefficient in different diffusion time regimes. These expressions are validated using numerical simulations in two dimensions.

What dominates the time dependence of diffusion transverse to axons: Intra- or extra-axonal water?
Brownian motion of water molecules provides an essential length scale, the diffusion length, commensurate with cell dimensions in biological tissues. Measuring the diffusion coefficient as a function of diffusion time makes in vivo diffusion MRI uniquely sensitive to the cellular features about three orders of magnitude below imaging resolution. However, there is a longstanding debate, regardin...

In this study, nanoporous silica aerogel and silica aerogel-activated carbon composites have been synthesized using a water glass precursor by cost effective ambient pressure drying method. Equilibrium and kinetics of benzene and ethyl benzene adsorption on silica aerogel and its composites have been measured in a batch mode at tree weights of adsorbent. متن کاملAnalytical and numerical study of the apparent diffusion coefficient in diffusion MRI at long diffusion times and low b- values
Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging provides a measure of the average distance travelled by water molecules in a medium and can give useful information on cellular structure and structural change when the medium is biological tissue. In this paper, two approximate models for the apparent diffusion coefficient at low b-values and long diffusion times are formulated and validated. The first is a...

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that begins most commonly in young adults and is characterized pathologically by multiple areas of central nervous system (CNS) white matter inflammation, demyelination, and glial scarring. The most valuable aid for diagnosis is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). New type of MRI has been developed on the basis of molecular diffusion which ...
